Overview

This educational activity is needed to enhance healthcare professionals’ analysis of the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to adolescent depression and suicide, enabling earlier recognition of risk factors and more comprehensive, patient-centered care. Given the rising prevalence of mental health concerns among teens and the significant impact of depression on academic performance, relationships, and overall well-being, clinicians must be equipped with evidence-based strategies for assessment, intervention, and prevention.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and residents. It will also benefit pharmacists, social workers, counselors, and other healthcare professionals working in the mental health field.

Objectives
  1. Analyze patient-centered interactions that make the biopsychosocial model scientific.
  2. Evaluate why medicine ignores the biopsychosocial model.
  3. Reflect on ways to correct the mental health crisis.
  4. Discuss Failures and Promises in Biopsychosocial Medicine.
  5. Describe system-level challenges and opportunities in hospital-based mental healthcare delivery for youth presenting with suicide risk and behavioral dysregulation.
  6. Identify evidence-informed strategies for screening, risk stratification, safety planning, and management for youth at risk of suicide or behavioral crisis in hospital settings.
  7. Evaluate the use of pathways, interprofessional collaboration and data to inform the care of vulnerable youth, and their families, who are at risk for safety concerns related to their behavioral health needs.
  8. Discuss systems solutions for hospital-based mental healthcare.
  9. Compare the efficacy, mechanisms, limitations, and clinical roles of established and emerging pharmacologic treatments for treatment-resistant depression.
  10. Apply a systematic, evidence-informed approach to identifying pseudo-resistance and selecting pharmacologic or neuromodulatory interventions based on treatment history, illness severity, and clinical context.
