2026 Trauma Conference: From Scene to Recovery - Trauma Care Across the System

This trauma-focused educational program provides attendees with a comprehensive overview of key issues across the continuum of trauma care, from identifying human trafficking victims and addressing challenges in rural emergency response to stabilizing and transferring critically injured patients. Sessions also explore family perspectives on trauma, mass casualty preparedness, damage control orthopedics, and the clinical and forensic evaluation of neck compression injuries, emphasizing multidisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practice, and improved patient outcomes.

Audience: This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and EMS personnel involved in the care of the traumatically injured adult and pediatric patients.

1. Outline common indicators and red flags of human trafficking in healthcare settings.
2. Review the roles of healthcare providers, law enforcement, and multidisciplinary teams in responding to suspected human trafficking cases.
3. Demonstrate best practices for initial response, evidence preservation, and investigative follow-up through review of human trafficking case scenarios.
4. Identify the unique logistical, geographic, and resource limitations affecting trauma care delivery in rural environments.
5. Evaluate evidence-based strategies for triage, communication, and transport decisions in rural pre-hospital settings.
6. Develop approaches to improve patient outcomes through regional trauma systems, telemedicine, and coordinated emergency response.
7. Identify essential stabilization interventions required before interfacility transfer of critically injured trauma patients.
8. Prioritize management of airway, breathing, circulation, and hemorrhage control to reduce deterioration during transport.
9. Develop standardized transfer protocols that ensure effective communication and continuity of care between facilities.
10. Demonstration of a nurse’s experience with a real-life trauma situation.
11. Discover how a personal and professional perspective can influence a commitment to excellence in healthcare and patient advocacy.
12. Differentiate mass casualty triage methodologies and their application during large-scale emergencies.
13. Analyze resource allocation strategies that maximize survival when patient demand exceeds available resources.
14. Apply principles of incident command, communication, and multidisciplinary coordination during mass casualty events.
15. Explain the principles and indications of damage control orthopedics in severely injured trauma patients.
16. Distinguish between definitive fixation and temporary stabilization strategies based on patient physiology and injury severity.
17. Apply evidence-based decision-making to reduce complications associated with polytrauma and orthopedic injuries.
18. Describe the normal anatomy of the neck and explain how various forms of neck compression produce characteristic injury patterns.
19. Differentiate the clinical and forensic findings associated with suicidal hanging and strangulation by recognizing subtle physical signs and injury patterns.
20. Identify common pitfalls in the interpretation of neck compression injuries in both clinical and death investigation settings.
