Overview
This year’s seminar will cover topics relevant to both healthcare and law. The intersection of healthcare and law is incredibly important since these two fields deeply influence each other and have a profound impact on individuals, communities, and society. Policies and law play a vital role in shaping healthcare systems. The relationship between both disciplines is dynamic and evolving and requires collaboration across disciplines to ensure the best outcomes for everyone. In this seminar, we will first look at ways for physicians and other health professionals to identify and manage stress to help reduce burnout in the industry. Second, participants will hear about strategies to recognize bullying and incivility in the workplace. They will discover how to assess for violence risks and to identify best practices to recognize and prevent potential threat or harm. Finally, we will hear most recent legal perspectives with case law updates on decisions that impact both healthcare professionals and attorneys. Medical malpractice lawsuits and medical related legal decisions will be reviewed. Ultimately the relationship between healthcare and law helps balance individual rights with societal needs, and it is vital for addressing the ethical, social, and regulatory challenges of modern medicine.

Objectives
  1. Get a Grip: Stress Management for Physicians and Other Healthcare Professionals Identify warning signs of stress overload.
  2. Recognize the importance of work/life integration.
  3. Describe the value of teamwork and how it impacts stress levels.
  4. Access the “real self” through tools such as Active Listening and Powerful Questioning.
  5. Review how to access a professional coaching journey.
  6. Strategies to End Bullying and Incivility Identify behaviors that define bullying and incivility.
  7. Explain the consequences of bullying to assist in elevating the priority of prevention and response measures.
  8. Implement best practices to help prevent bullying and incivility.
  9. Behavioral Threat Assessment Identify interpersonal violence risks and threats in medical and legal settings.
  10. Describe affective v. targeted violence, transient v. actual threats, and how to identify each.
  11. Recognize practical guidance and tools created for proper threat assessment.
  12. Ohio Medical Malpractice Case Law Update: Decisions that Impact Healthcare Professionals and Attorneys Identify recent caselaw affecting medical malpractice claims, outcomes, and defenses.
  13. Review how medical related statutes (including ORC Section 4732 regarding nursing care) and defenses are being addressed in Ohio.
  14. Analyze recent medical related legal decisions as they affect all levels of healthcare professionals, from staff nurses to advance practice providers and physicians.
  15. Liability/Malpractice Claims: Trends and General Updates Explore the nature of recent claims and outcomes in medical malpractice lawsuits in Lucas County and surrounding areas.
  16. Distinguish trends relative to claims as they relate to various practice areas and care issues, including nursing, advance practice, and physician providers.
  17. Assess the risks of outlier verdicts and claims, as related to trends.
