Objectives
  1. Explain how to handle massive surge of penetrating trauma patients.
  2. Identify short-cuts used to handle surge with limited resources and manpower.
  3. Cite changes in hospital and pre-hospital management needed to save gray tags in a multiple casualty incident (MCI).
  4. Describe changes in triage necessary to be safe and successful in a MCI.
  5. Discuss strategies needed to quickly move patients through ER to definitive care.
  6. Describe airway anatomy and innervation.
  7. Recognize association of traumatic mechanism and potential airway injury.
  8. Implement management of traumatic airway in different clinic settings.
  9. Explain various surgical airway approaches.
  10. Identify different types of traumatic intracranial bleeds (injuries) on CT scan.
  11. Explain heterogeneity of intracranial injuries associated with trauma, and reasons one treatment does not fit all for TBIs.
  12. Review potential indications for escalation of therapy for TBI patients.
  13. Discuss potential outcomes for TBI.
  14. Explain how an evidence based approach has been utilized to study EMS response to MCI.
  15. List common shortcomings associated with MCI preparations/training.
  16. Identify several assumptions or "myths" commonly used in MCI preparations.
  17. Summarize concepts of FAST (Focused Abdominal Sonography for Trauma).
  18. Describe basic principles of ultrasound guidance.
  19. Relate clinical vignettes of FAST.
  20. Discuss future use of FAST.
